Pool Heat Pump Not Heating: What to Check Before Calling a Technician?

Your pool stays cold even though your heat pump is running? This is a common situation, especially at the beginning of the season or after a few weeks of use.

Before thinking about a repair, several simple checks can be done. In many cases, the problem can be fixed without intervention, whether you are in Montreal or on the South Shore.

1. Check the Programmed Temperature

This may seem obvious, but it is often the cause.

Make sure that:

  • the desired temperature is higher than the current water temperature

  • the heating mode is properly activated

  • the screen is not showing a ventilation or cooling mode

An incorrect configuration simply prevents the heat pump from heating.

2. Check the Water Flow

A pool heat pump needs sufficient water flow to work properly.

To check:

  • Is the filter clean?

  • Is the pump working normally?

  • Are the valves open?

  • Is the bypass properly adjusted?

Water flow that is too low prevents the system from starting or greatly reduces performance.

3. Nettoyer le filtre de piscine

A clogged filter is a very common cause.

When the filter is dirty:

  • water circulates less well

  • the heat pump may go into safety mode

  • heating becomes ineffective

A simple cleaning or backwash can quickly solve the problem.

4. Observe the Fan and Compressor

Heat pumps work by capturing heat from the air.

So, if the outdoor temperature is too low, the system becomes less effective, or even inactive. In addition, several models stop heating below a certain threshold, often around 10°C.

In Quebec, this is a common situation, especially in spring and fall.

5. Observe the Fan and Compressor

A heat pump that is working should:

  • spin the fan

  • produce a constant noise (compressor)

If the fan is spinning but the water is not heating, it is possible that:

  • the compressor is not starting

  • an internal component is defective

In this case, an inspection will be necessary.

6. Check the Error Codes

Several heat pumps display codes on the screen.

These codes can indicate:

  • a water pressure problem

  • a temperature sensor error

  • a system protection

Consult your device’s manual to understand the message displayed.

7. Inspect the Heat Exchanger

Over time, deposits can accumulate in the heat exchanger.

Result:

  • less effective heat transfer

  • water that does not warm up

This type of cleaning is more technical and it is not recommended to carry out this kind of repair yourself. A heat pump should be inspected and repaired by a refrigeration specialist. POSEIDON has this type of qualified technician to intervene safely and properly.

8. Check the Installation Conditions

A poorly installed heat pump can also explain poor performance.

To observe:

  • air circulation around the unit

  • absence of obstacles (wall, fence, vegetation)

  • sufficient space for air evacuation

A lack of ventilation greatly reduces the heating capacity.

When to Call a Technician?

If after all these checks, the water still does not heat, the heat pump starts without producing heat, an error code persists, etc., it is time to call a professional.
