Noisy Pool Pump: Possible Causes and What to Do

Nothing is more relaxing than the gentle sound of water in your pool… until a high-pitched hum or mechanical grinding noise ruins the moment! A noisy pool pump is not only unpleasant for you and your neighbours, it is also a clear sign that your equipment needs immediate attention.

Why is your pump making so much noise and, more importantly, how can you fix it? Here are the most common causes and the solutions to help restore peace and quiet in your backyard.

1. A “rocks” or gravel-like noise: Cavitation

If your pump sounds like it is grinding small rocks, it is most likely experiencing cavitation. This happens when the pump is not receiving enough water. It then starts drawing in air, which creates vapour bubbles that violently implode against the impeller.

What to do:

  • Check the water level in the pool. The water should reach approximately halfway to two-thirds up the skimmer opening.

  • Make sure the skimmer basket and pump basket are not blocked by leaves or debris.

  • Inspect the O-rings on the pump lid. If they are dry, cracked or not properly lubricated, air may be getting in.

2. A high-pitched squeal or sharp whistling sound: Worn bearings

This is the most common mechanical issue in pumps that have a few years of wear. If the noise sounds like a high-pitched whistle, the ball bearings inside the motor are most likely worn or rusted. This usually happens when the mechanical seal leaks and allows water to enter the motor housing.

What to do:

  • This type of repair often requires replacing the bearings or replacing the entire motor.

  • If the pump is older, replacing the motor or the complete pump is often the most cost-effective and durable option in the long run.

3. A humming sound or poor water circulation: Blocked impeller

Does your pump turn on and make a deep, strained humming sound, but the water is not circulating properly? The impeller, which is the rotating part that moves the water, may be blocked by debris. Pine needles, hair or small pebbles can sometimes get past the filter basket and jam the mechanism.

What to do:

  • Always turn off the power before handling any part of the pump.

  • Open the pump lid, remove the basket and check whether something is blocking the impeller.

  • Carefully remove any debris.

4. Intense vibration noise: The pump base

Sometimes, the pump itself is working perfectly, but its interaction with the surrounding environment is the problem. If the equipment is installed directly on an uneven concrete slab or a wooden platform, the normal vibrations from the motor can create a very noisy resonance effect.

What to do:

  • Place a thick rubber mat, such as an anti-vibration mat, under the pump base to absorb shocks.

  • Check that the anchor bolts securing the pump to its base are tight and stable.
